Make Believe

Strange ideas to finished oil paintings

The entire process from where the idea comes from to the last white highlight. At the heart of this approach is juxtaposition: taking two or more unlikely, even odd elements and placing them together to create new meaning.

The more unexpected the combination, the more it demands to be taken seriously

and that's where realism comes in.

In this course, I'll teach you every essential oil painting technique  from imprimatura to final scumbling highlights - so you'll have the tools to approach and create anything you can imagine.

Realism as a form of persuasion.

I get a lot of messages asking “how did you even think of that??”

So this course is the entire process, not just the brushwork. Most of my meaning comes from juxtaposition: two or more unlikely things put together until they make a new meaning.

I learnt to paint more or less realistically because I wanted my weird ideas to be immediately convincing. The image can be completely absurd, but paint it well enough and it becomes something a viewer can't argue with - beautiful to look at, and holding a great deal underneath.

You'll learn 6 old masters' techniques, adjusted by me for speed, convenience and modern tools - and finish with a painting of your own.

I WANT TO LEARN

I will teach you:

Idea generation & my creative process

Brainstorm and juxtapose references to turn a strange idea into a painting-ready concept.

Imprimatura, sketching & underpainting

Set up your canvas, map out your composition and build a solid foundation before adding detail.

Colour mixing & classical techniques

Learn to mix any colour from primaries, and master glazing, sfumato and grisaille for depth and texture.

Bringing your subject to life

Push through the "ugly stage," solidify your underpainting and add the details that make it convincing.

Final touches & finishing your painting

Add highlights, glazing and scumbling to complete your piece with confidence and polish.

Hi, I'm Amber

a South African oil painter based in Cape Town with a degree in Fine Art from the Michaelis School of Fine Art. I make surrealist paintings that use animals as vessels for very human issues: things we'd rather look away from, sometimes strange, sometimes funny, sometimes uncomfortable. Women's issues show up a lot in my work too, wrapped in fantasy and myth so they land differently than they would head-on.

My love for animals has been with me since I was a kid, and it's still the thread running through almost everything I paint. I started building my social media presence back in university, alongside working in galleries and learning how to actually sell my art, lessons that shaped both how I make work and how I share it.

I don't paint to give answers. I paint to make you pause and ask a question you hadn't thought to ask before. That's why realism matters so much in my process: if the image is convincing enough, even the strangest idea becomes impossible to dismiss.
In this course, I'll walk you through my entire process, from that first spark of an idea to a finished painting.
